CNN —Why should you care about Tuesday’s elections in Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi and Virginia? The storylines to watch include abortion, disinformation, dirty money and a test of that elusive but essential creature known as the red state Democrat. John Avlon CNNLet’s start with the Buckeye State, where abortion rights are on the ballot. Beshear is also the rare red state Democrat who can connect with rural voters — something Democrats desperately need more of. Meanwhile in Mississippi, there’s another governor’s race that The Washington Post is calling the most competitive in 20 years.

ATLANTA (AP) — A former employee is suing to force a Mississippi utility to repay $382 million that the federal government gave to build a failed coal-fueled power plant. Kelli Williams, a former construction manager for Atlanta-based Southern Co., filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the company and its subsidiary Mississippi Power Co. in 2018. The Kemper County power plant was supposed to be a world leader in turning soft coal into a gas and burning it to generate power, while removing climate-warming carbon dioxide and other pollutants. The cost of the plant ballooned and Mississippi Power could never make it run reliably. For example, she alleged Mississippi Power erected piping without permanent fasteners, knowing the work would have to be redone again later at higher cost, an allegation first aired by The Guardian in 2018.

(AP) — The last Republican who lost a general election for Mississippi governor is endorsing the Democratic nominee in this year's race. “It’s a big deal for me as a former Republican member of Congress and as a former Republican nominee for governor to vote for a Democrat,” Parker said. Parker was the Republican nominee for governor in 1999, and lost a close race to Democrat Ronnie Musgrove, who was lieutenant governor. The 1999 governor's race had to be decided in the Mississippi House because neither Musgrove nor Parker fulfilled the two requirements to win the race, which also had two little-known candidates. Republicans have controlled the Mississippi House since 2012.

Chris Christie's presidential campaign will report raising $1.65 million in the second quarter, which included the former New Jersey governor's first 25 days in the 2024 campaign. “In 25 days, the Christie campaign is building a strong foundation with small-dollar donors, industry leaders and familiar faces in the Republican Party,” said adviser Maria Comella. In addition, the super PAC aligned with Christie, Tell It Like It Is PAC, said it raised nearly $5.9 million between the former governor's campaign announcement on June 6 and the close of the second quarter on June 30. The Christie campaign also highlighted a number of notable donors who have given support so far, including several — former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Kentucky Republican donors Kelly and Joe Craft — who have also given support to former Vice President Mike Pence.

Former Vice President Mike Pence will report raising nearly $1.2 million in the first three weeks of his presidential campaign, according to a Pence adviser. Pence has gotten support from some major Republican donors, according to the Pence adviser. Haley Barbour, former beer magnate Pete Coors, and Ross Perot, Jr., whose father waged an independent campaign for president in 1992. It's not yet clear if these donors contributed to the Pence campaign directly, his aligned super PAC, or if they have also contributed to other presidential candidates. The pro-Pence super PAC, Committed to America, has also raised nearly $2.7 million, according to the adviser.

The Republican National Committee plans to closely examine what role former President Donald Trump played in the party's underwhelming 2022 midterm results as part of its audit of the GOP's performance. And how do we learn from that to win elections going forward?" Henry Barbour, an RNC committeeman from Mississippi who was tasked in November with co-authoring the RNC’s post-election review, said in an interview Tuesday. Barbour said his examination seeks to "get into the weeds" on everything from Trump to turnout to ticket-splitting. Dhillon has since announced a challenge to McDaniel for party chair, but Barbour said she is still on the team overseeing the post-election audit.
